What We Do

Lighthouse Children and Youth Ministry is committed to the poorest children in Rehoboth, Namibia. Through various programs, we offer children love, attention, education, a warm meal, the opportunity to go to school, and practical help.

Kids Programs

Our programs for children form the core of the work in Rehoboth. We reach more than 80 children with daily care and support.

Afterschool Care

From Monday to Friday, we care for 80 children who grow up in poverty. The afterschool care focuses on the most vulnerable children in Rehoboth.

Children whose parents are absent due to death, alcohol addiction, or who simply do not have the means to provide their children with what they need. Every day it is uncertain whether these children will get something to eat at home.

  • A warm meal daily
  • Educational interactive lessons and activities
  • Sports & games
  • Homework guidance
  • Practical help with school uniforms, school supplies, clothing and toiletries

Sunshine Club

In addition to the children who need both emotional and practical help, there are also many children who do have a parent who gives attention and love, but where there are no finances for a daily meal and school supplies.

This group of 30 children comes to us every Monday, together with the children from the afterschool care. They receive a food package every two weeks and we provide school supplies. Parents of these children also help during the program. Monday is a fun day with singing, Bible stories, a warm meal, and fun activities.

Hostel Program

There are children in Rehoboth whose home situation is so bad that it is better for them to live elsewhere. A hostel is a place next to the school where children live.

Currently, we support 22 children who go to hostels. We ensure that their hostel fees are paid, that they have a school uniform, bag, and materials, and they also receive toiletries every month.

Youth Work

For teenagers, we organize special programs where they come together, grow in their faith, and can develop themselves.

Lighthouse Youth

For the teens, we organize youth afternoons. Every Monday at 4:00 PM, the teens come to us. Like the Sunshine Club, they receive a food package every two weeks and are provided with school supplies.

The program starts with a game, then we eat together, have a time of worship, and reflect on a Biblical theme. The teens who come to the afterschool care during the week are also present during these afternoons.

Skill Centre

Many of our children struggle with learning but are good with their hands. By offering various skills, children can discover what they like and what they are good at.

Agricultural project

Hope Garden

At the heart of our Skill Centre is Hope Garden, an agricultural project where children and young people learn about gardening, agriculture, and sustainability. They learn to grow vegetables, care for plants, and see how food grows from seed to harvest.

The harvest from the garden is used for the meals we serve daily, so the children directly see the result of their work.

Creative skills

Needlework Project

In the needlework project, children and young people learn to sew, embroider, and do handwork. These skills can later be useful for work or to make and repair their own clothes.

The project offers not only practical skills but also a creative outlet and the pride of making something with your own hands.

Technical skills

Metal & Woodwork

For children and youth with technical interests, we offer workshops in metal and woodwork. Through these programs they develop practical skills that prepare them for a possible career in construction, maintenance or craftsmanship.

Under the guidance of experienced volunteers, they work on concrete projects where they learn to work with materials and tools safely. This gives them self-confidence and a practical skill they can use in the future.

Training & Guidance

In addition to the daily programs, we also offer training and guidance to parents, young mothers, and work together with schools and social workers.

Support for young mothers

Young & Pregnant

Unfortunately, teenage pregnancies are common in Namibia. Many young girls have no idea what is good to do during and after pregnancy. We believe it is important that they are well informed.

In collaboration with Stichting Mommaluv, we distribute packages for newborn babies and offer a 12-week training to prepare young girls for the arrival of their baby.

Social Work
Building change together

Social Work

Our children grow up in difficult circumstances. To change the children's situation, something must also change at home. That is why we have contact with the parents.

We try to involve them in their child's process through training, advice, and a listening ear. We also work with local schools and social workers in Rehoboth to bring about change together.

Connection with home and school

School & Home Visits

To get a complete picture of each child's situation, we regularly visit the schools and homes of the children. This helps us better understand what each child needs.

During school visits, we consult with teachers about progress and any concerns. During home visits, we gain insight into the home situation and can provide targeted help where needed.
